History of Burton Hall
| The west wing of Burton Hall is the earliest part of the building
and was constructed in the 1760's. The main part of the house was
then added in the 1830's when agriculture was prosperous. |
|
Owned by the same family since 1903
Back in 1903 the longstanding tenant (Mr Laing) of Burton Hall farm,
gave up his tenancy. The hall was then split into two farms called
East Burton Farm and West Burton Farm. |
 |
The Humphreys Family
The Humphreys family moved to Burton Hall and took over as tenants
in 1903, taking the land (542 acres) at East Burton Farm. William
Humphreys subsequently bought Burton Hall and East Burton Farm in
1917 from Earl Grey of Fallodens Estate. |
|
Self-catering
Andrew Humphreys took over East Burton Farm on the death of his father
William in the 1940's. Andrew's daughter Eve took over the running
of Burton Hall and East Burton Farm in 1978, starting bed and breakfast
back in 1990. Eve has recently given up farming and now looks after
the holiday cottage with its wonderful views of Bamburgh. |
